Honeymoon in Vegas was originally made available to the public in 1992. Despite the fact that the movie has an impressive cast, it is not a movie that very many people remember watching. The movie pairs the star of the National Treasure movies, Nicholas Cage, with Sex in the City icon, Sarah Jessica Parker. The movie is supposed to be a romantic comedy, but for some reason many of the people who went to see the movie felt that it lacked that little bit of magic that makes some romantic comedies stand out from all of the others.
The story that the movie relies on is a deathbed promise that Jack Singer (Cage) made to his mother. He swore that he would never, ever, get married. That he would remain a bachelor for the rest of his life. At the time this promise seemed easy to keep. Years later, Cage decides that he is ready to tie the knot. He and his girlfriend Betsy (Parker) to Las Vegas where they plan on eloping before spending the night at the Balley’s Hotel.
Things quickly start to unravel when they get to Las Vegas. The problem begins when the couple is spotted by the character Tommy Korman. Korman cannot get Betsy out of his mind. He is struck by how strong a resemblance she bears to his late wife. He decides that he needs to spend more time with her. In an attempt to do just this, Korman cons Singer into playing a game of poker. The problem is that the game is fixed. When the dust clears, Singer is down a staggering $65,000 which he does not know how he is even going to begin to pay.
Korman offers a solution. He will erase Singer’s debt if he can spend just a single weekend with Betsy. Seeing no other options, Singer agrees on just one condition. The weekend has to be free of sex. Singer starts to worry when he learns than rather staying in Las Vegas, Korman and Betsy have gone to Hawaii. After making the trip from Las Vegas to Hawaii, Singer is attacked by Korman. Korman is able to convince the authorities to have Singer arrested for assault.
With Singer in jail, Korman starts applying pressure to Betsy. His intention is to get her to agree to marry him. Betsy is starting to believe that she is completely out of options and ultimately agrees to marry Korman. As soon as he has her consent, Korman and Betsy fly back to Las Vegas for the official ceremony. When he gets out of jail, Jack is determined to get back to Betsy and stop the wedding. His intentions are good but when he gets stuck in San Jose, the situation starts to look very bleak. Stopping the wedding involves a group of Elvis Impersonators who enjoy skydiving.
Honeymoon in Vegas is not a bad movie; it just is not very memorable. It is a good choice when you are looking for a way that you can while away a few hours on a rainy afternoon.
